I own a PS3. I’m also a Netflix member. For the longest time I was jealous that 360 users could watch Netflix movies on their systems and thought “Why doesn’t Netflix do something like that for PS3?”. Still, I left it as a pipe dream and went on my merry way. I guess someone at Netflix is psychic, or monitoring my thoughts for their own devious purposes, because within the last week Netflix has released their ‘Watch Instantly’ capabilities on PS3.
Simply go to the Netflix PS3 page, either sign up or login and request a streaming disc of your very own. Once delivered you have to activate it, but activation is incredibly simple and almost instantaneous. After that, you can view movies by category, or use your computer to search for movies to add to your queue. Sadly, search funciontality isn’t a part of the programming yet. One can only hope it soon will be though.
Picture and sound quality are on par with anything you get from the video store, including classic movies. And Netflix will occasionally send an email asking how the quality of a movie you viewed was, it’s nice to see quality control still exists somewhere. My only complaint is that fast forward is a little wonky and done via thumbnail images, but that’s to be expected with streaming media.
All in all it’s a good addition to any movie collection. Great quality, ease of use, and I don’t even have to put on pants to go get a movie. Plus, if you’re a Netflix subscriber, it’s already part of what you pay for. And the best part, as far as I’m concerned, you’re not tethered to a computer. You can watch movies with your friends around a TV. Nothing is more awkward and trying to watch a movie or play a video game with your buddies while crowded around a computer monitor.
