It’s that time of year again… time for all the ghosts, goblins, witches, demons, and assorted kids-show characters to come around begging for candy at your door.
Or, if you’re an adult fan of Halloween, time to start digging out those classic horror movies of yore. Ah yes… Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Lon Cheney… maybe toss in a few splatterfests starring Jason or Freddy for good measure. Good times.
Or, if you’re like me, and I know I am, you dust off an old console or two for some horror-themed retrogaming.
I hope this doesn’t come as much of a shock to you, but the horror genre has always made for good video game experiences. Years before anyone had even heard the names “Jill Valentine” or “Claire Redfield,” gamers were trying to find their way out of haunted mansions, fend off classic movie monsters, or escape the rampage of an insane serial killer… or even, in at least one case, become that insane serial killer!
Today, I’ll be taking a brief look at three cartridges for the venerated Atari 2600 that you might want to dig out for this year’s Halloween party as a mood-setting interactive horror show. Yes, the 2600 often leaves much to the imagination in terms of visuals and sound… but that actually works out pretty well for Halloween! We’ve got an Atari original, a licensed game based on an infamous film, and a guest appearance by one of the all-time great movie monsters of yore.
And for those who’re burnt out on a certain popular series of novels, I promise — this is a 100% vampire-free edition of the Retro-Active Halloween Special!
So grab your joysticks, your popcorn and perhaps your date… tonight’s drive-in triple feature begins on Page 2!
