Comic Rundown: Bats, Wolves and Weapon X
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Nov 4th, 2008

Okay, the big comic release (for a very biased author) this week is my latest release, Bat & Wolf. It was my winning entry for Zeroes2Heroes’ Direct 2 Development, and after red-hot artist Daniel Bradford illustrated my script, the results are free for all to see at Zeroes2Heroes here. Just open up the comic reader right under the red “Read the Comic!” arrow to start perusing the tale of two middle-aged monsters fighting to save their friend - a full-time monster hunter.

Okay, onto the real comic book releases this week!

Marvel unveils a new Silver Age superhero in Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel #1. This hero hasn’t appeared since 1961, and the book has Iron Man racing to discover the truth about this mysterious hero when the Mighty Avengers fall before a new threat.

Iron Man: The End #1 charts the hypothetical final days of Tony Stark as he enters into “legacy mode”, until the world is threatened by a new evil, and Tony Stark must dawn the Iron Man armor one last time to save it. These “The End” series have been a mixed bag, but an nonetheless insightful one. Definitely worth picking up at least to see what it’s all about.

Marvel Zombies 3 #2 opens with Machine Man and Jocasta - the apparently “immune” robotic heroes - racing through the Marvel Zombie universe in search of a cure. But before they can do that, they’ll also have to face off with the Zombie Kingpin!

There’s quite a lot of buzz about Ultimatum #1 - Jeph Leob and David Finch’s magnum opus (or death knell) for the Ultimates universe. Now that the mainstream M.U. is looking quite a bit more like the Ulimates universe (hip reboots, government heroes and more), where does this lead the Ultimate alternative? Ultimatum hopes to answer that with a world-shattering event which promises to change everything.

Weapon X: First Class #1 paves the way for the Wolverine movie by featuring all four leads on its variant cover - Wolverine, Sabertooth, Gambit and Deadpool! How were all these characters - in particular Gambit - involved in a team together, and what happened to such a team-up that we don’t already know? The other First Classes have been, well, First Class material, so I’d definitely check out this new X-book.

On the DC side, Final Crisis: Resist has Snapper Carr, Cheetah and Mr. Terrific struggling to rally Checkmate against the forces of Darkseid, but that’s easier said than done when the Anti-Life Equation has ravaged the world so much I’m betting many governments are probably considering a scorched Earth program already. Is Resistance futile?

The Justice Society of America faces off with their Earth-2 counterparts, the Justice Society Infinity, an alternate-reality version of grown-up Infinity Inc. At the heart of this all is Power Girl, who once believed Earth-2 was here home, but now finds herself more alone than ever - even in the middle of a gigantic superhero brawl!

Terra #1 of 4 comes right out of Terror Titans, by re-introducing the second Terra, an Earth-wielding superbeing with a dark legacy in the Teen Titans. Will this character overcome the treacherous past of her predecessor? With covers by Amanda Connor and scripts by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, I’m wiling to give it a chance just to see.

The new Terra looks pretty interesting to me as well. Makes me wish I actually lived where I could BUY comic books… as it is if I wanted them I’d probably have to road-trip about 45 minutes south of where I live to Lancaster OH, which is a helluva hike just for a comic book. But from what I’ve been hearing about her, Terra might just be worth the trip.

Waitaminit… [re-reads the description of FC: Resist] …No. No, no, no. You did NOT just tell me SNAPPER CARR is in a current DC comic. I think a little piece of me just died on the inside. They must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel for character revivals. What’s next, Sugar and Spike?!

I’m in the same boat, Devin - I live at least 30 minutes away from the nearest Borders (limited selected) and 45 minutes from an actual comic book shop. Still, gotta get my fix somehow . . .

And yes, Snapper Carr is back and playing a big role in Final Crisis apparently. It seems they are either bringing back everyone for completion sake or really, really REALLY desperate. Probably the latter.
