    Comic Rundown: Bat-Ape and Kite-Man
    Posted by Richard Pulfer on Nov 25th, 2008

    And the Brave and the Bold quote of the week is . . . “Hey Bats, do you see what I see? Because I see gorillas . . . riding pterodacyls . . . with harpoon guns . . . stealing a ship.”

    Last week’s Brave and Bold team-up with Plastic Man has the show getting better and better - and funnier and funnier. Plastic Man seemed a more natural fit for Batman’s partner, and the humor seemed more prevalent in ways spanning machine gun bling, Bat-Ape and Kite-Man (the last one had my non-fanboy brother looking up and saying, “There’s a guy named Kite-Man? Seriously?) My only regret is the sultry Brazilian babe Fire shows up in the opening bout with the Gentleman Ghost and disappears after the opening credits.

    Ghost Rider: Danny Ketch #2 sounds interesting. Not only are we seeing both more of Marvel’s oft-underplayed magic side but also Danny Ketch’s return to the spotlight after a fall from grace - plus “exploding Cornish pixies, vermin in the shadows, and an enormous fiery elephant.” What’s not to love?

    Guardians of the Galaxy #7 has the team still reeling from Secret Invasion and their team leader Star-Lord missing to boot. Now the remnants of the team must keep, well, guarding the galaxy with a couple new members in their ranks.

    If you get Hulk #8, try to get the Cho variant just because it looks awesome. Not only does it have the classic Green Genes pitted against not one, not two, not three - but an uncountable horde of Windigos - but it also has the Lady Liberators going up against Red Hulk, who is now apparently just called Rulk by lazy Marvel scribes.

    The Nova Corps seemingly return in Nova  #19, but is this a good thing for Richard Rider. The Worldmind is back with a couple new recruits, but with a Shi’ar added to their number, I have to wonder if this might serve as an bigger tie-in to War of Kings, with Emperor Vulcan - head of the Shi’ar Empire - finally making his move.

    And wouldn’t you know it - the very next item is a direct tie-in to War of Kings! Secret Invasion: Inhumans #4 finds Medusa finally re-united with her lost husband - they survive a Kree vs. Skrull war of epic magnitude. And of course, this all ties into War of Kings coming down the pipes!

    Secret Invasion further continues in Secret Invasion: X-Men #4 with the X-Men facing an dangerous dilemma and possibly bloody change in tactics to defeat the Skrulls if they aren’t careful.

    On the DC side, Batman RIP finally reaches its conclusion in Batman #681. With his lover Jezebel Jet apparently revealed to be the Black Glove, this conflict moves closer and closer to a heart-rendering conflict for the Batman. The ultimate, million dollar question: just what will the final toll be on Batman?

    In Birds of Prey #124, Barbara Gordon and the Joker face off for the first time since Gordon’s crippling at the hands of the Clown Prince of Crime. But even if Oracle wins this fight, just how far will she go to punish the Joker?

    The Justice Society of America has at least one more one-shot up its sleeve - The Justice Society of America Kingdom Come Special: The Kingdom. The apparently benevolent Gog had granted the wishes of many members of the Justice Society. He had made Starman sane. He has sent Power Girl “home” and he has restored Dr. Midnite’s sight. But these wishes have a dark side, and what will the indestructable hero Citizen Steel wish for?

    Reign in Hell #5 has the battle for Hell just beginning as the magical heroes of the DC Universe are caught in the middle and their loyalties to one another and themselves more tested than ever. This looks like an extremely promising comic series for any fan of the DCU’s magic side, so definitely pick it up.

    Wonder Woman #26 significantly shakes up the status-quo as ruminations of a new, ummmm, male Wonder Woman (something sounds seriously wrong already) start breaking the surface. Are these the Spartans we saw way back in the previews of Final Crisis? And how does it tie into whatever Special Agent Diana Prince and her team of agents are fighting. The plot sounds kinda lame, but Gail Simone has never let me know before - so I have to give it a look.

    That’s it for this month. Other than the conclusion of Batman RIP, not much in the crossover end, but be sure to check out the plenty of tidbits in Justice Society, Nova and Secret Invasion: Inhumans - these will lead to greater things!

      There actually was a Kiteman (sans hyphen) at one time, though not a superhero or even a comic character. He was a dope who’d para-glide into old Veterans Stadium during Phillies games in the ’70s, and virtually always crash-land when so doing. Naturally, this being Philly, the one time he actually landed safely he received his just due from the Philly faithful - a standing boo-vation. ^^;
