If you have an iPhone you know there are a myriad of apps out there for download and/or purchase through the App Store. Some very useful, others not in the slightest. So, I thought we could take this opportunity to cover some pretty useful apps that you may not have found wading through the sea of uselessness.
So here they are, in no particular order:
- iWant
- Need to find a gas station close buy? Maybe a bank? Perhaps a pharmacy? Well you’re in luck, iWant can find all these and many more with just a few taps. If you’re like me and you move alot (I mean alot) then it’s nice to know where everything is when you get there. The only problem is you can’t search a specific zip code, so if your phone says you’re somewhere else, then you’re just SOL.
- Yelp
- Yelp is a search engine for what is in your area. Just type in what you’re looking for and the results will be spit back at you, along with reviews of the places listed. Again, very handy for people on the move constantly.
- Urbanspoon
- Can’t decide where to eat, what to eat, or how much to spend? No worries, Urbanspoon has you covered. This app looks like a one-armed bandit and will randomly suggest restaurants for you. It’s split into neighborhood, cuisine, and price range, all which are lockable at your preferred setting.
- Pandora
- Tired of hearing the same thing you’ve got on your iPod or at home over and over again? Pandora is an online radio service that groups music together by criteria that may open doors to new music for you. It streams straight to your iPhone, although stream quality may be reduced while on the Edge network, and you don’t even have to put together a playlist.
- Wikipanion
- Ever wanted to look something up, but you weren’t close to a computer? Well, with this little app, that’s no longer a problem. It’s sort of like having Wikipedia in your pocket, only not as crowded as carrying a laptop in your pants.
There are many more extremely useful apps out there, to be sure, but I haven’t had the time or inclination to download and use them all. Besides, the ones I listed are free and you can’t beat that. Others that I tried offered some very useful functions, but also put up some extremely useless ones in the package. I’ll probably go back and look at them once they mature a little bit, it’s not fair to review them until they’ve hit their stride.
Oh, and for those of you wondering why NetShare wasn’t on this list, it’s because Apple removed them from the App Store for one reason or another.
