Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 claims to hold the answers to one of the biggest mysteries of Brand New Day - who is Jackpot? The red superheroine looks - and sounds - a lot like Mary Jane Watson, but under the mask there seems to be a completely different person. Who is she - and what was the other deal MJ made with Mephisto way back in One More Day?
Avengers: The Initiative ties right back into Secret Invasion as the final battle between Skrull and Avenger rages on for the next month or so. The Skull Kill Krew races to stop Yellowjacket, while apparently Mutant Zero - the hidden member of the 198 still-powered mutants - is revealed.
Plus, you gotta love Incredible Hercules #122, which has Hercules and Namor fighting over Namora - who sighs, unimpressed, and looks away from the raging battle of will - and lots and lots of testosterone.
Marvel Apes #4 (4?! We’ve had 4 issues so far? Seriously?!) has Gibbon and Speedball trying to stop the Ape-Vengers from conquering our world. Why an army of super-powered monkeys pose a dire threat to the Marvel Universe is beyond me - is Marvel Zombies 3 #2 out yet?
Nova #18 has Nova struggling to stop the Skrull Invasion of Project PEGASUS, save his brother’s life and find a new home for the now-defunct Worldmind computer - all in one day. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion there’s a Skrull shapeshifter somewhere in the mix, making the results quite nearly explosive!
In Secret Invasion: X-Men #3, the X-Men continue to go head-to-head and claw-to-claw with the Skrulls. The X-Men are seperated and desperate, but Hank McCoy might just have the most desperate secret weapon of them all up his sleeves.
Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #3 promises a major step in the relationship between the young Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. Written by Brian Michael Bendis, the issue is prompted as one of the most controversial of the year by Marvel.
Checkmate #31 is apparently the last issue of the superhero political action hero, as one of the most powerful superhero organizations in the world verges on the brink of conflict with China. What will happen to the new Checkmate in this “series finale” issue?
The next installment of the Green Lantern saga caps off in “Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns” - a one-shot prelude to “Blackest Night.” The Red Lanterns want vengence against Sinestro - but the Guardians have even more ominous plans for the rogue Lantern.
I’ve heard really good things about the upcoming graphic novel “Joker” by Brian Azzarello, which has Joker trying to take on both mobster and supervillain in another bid to bring the big joke on Gotham City.
Reign in Hell #4 hopefully boasts more details on the return of Dr. Fate - who is he? What happened after the Journey Into Mystery storyline? And what can he do to stop the war between Lord Satanus and Neron, as well as the many heroes trapped in the underworld since the war began.
That’s it for this week - have a happy Halloween!
