    Comic Rundown: Crisis Management
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Oct 21st, 2008

One character perpetually mis-used or under-used in the Spider-Man mythos is Flash Thompson, and Amazing Spider-Man #574 literally entitled “Whatever Happened to Flash Thompson”, as the character goes from the streets of New York to the Middle East as a soldier. It’s an interesting direction for the character, Marvel - don’t screw it up!

Ghost Rider: Danny Ketch #1 has another face from the past - Danny Ketch. Ever since Johnny Blaze returned to the rider’s seat, many fans have been asking whatever happened to Johnny’s one-successor. The answer - it ain’t pretty. With everything from carrion-birds to battering-rams on bikers, it looks like Danny Ketch is going down a pretty dark road.

Hulk #7 has an interesting team of Hulk-Busters - the Lady Liberators, consisting of several female superheroes, including She-Hulk and former Defenders collegue Valkyrie, on a mission to take down the Red Hulk and make the bloodthirsty creature pay as much as possible.

New Avengers #46 ties into Secret Invasion (of course), but also brings an interesting new angle to the equation. The supervillain Hood may have thrown his considerable syndicate into an alliance with the world’s greatest heroes - but what does the demon inside his Hood think of all this?

The penultimate issue of Secret Invasion has every man, woman, hero, villain and monster pited against the Skrull in the final battle. But since the Skrulls seem always one step ahead of the Earthlings every time, can this really end well?

She-Hulk’s Lady Liberators also debut in her own book - She-Hulk #34, written by fan-favorite Peter David. This is one heck of a superheroine team-up, mixing major characters (the Invisible Woman) with cult classics (The Valkyrie). I’m pretty interested to see how this shapely team-up shakes out.

Thunderbolts #25 also has the final battle between Norman Osborn and his Thunderbolts and the alien invasions. But when your team is filled with loose cannons galore willing to switch allegiance more times than a Quentin Tarantino turn-around, it’s no wonder that the Thunderbolts end as heroes or villains - it’s a wonder if they make it out alive!

X-Men: Legacy #217 follows Professor Xavier as his attempt to make peace with the X-Men faces brusie after bruise. After things certainly don’t go very well with Emma and Scott, things definitely aren’t going to go much better with Wolverine.

Halloween takes full force at DC in Batman: Gotham After Midnight #6, which has the Joker planning a mean trick-or-treat for Gotham City in this story, written by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night).

The Joker also faces off with the past in Birds of Prey #123, when he confronts the Oracle - Barbara Gordon. The question is, will Barbara wheel away from this encounter in worst shape than her first crippling encounter, or will she do the same - and worst - to the Clown Prince of Crime?

DC Universe: Halloween has another ghoulish surprise for comic book fans everywhere. This haunted holiday includes stories from Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Titans, El Diablo, Faust and others. Let’s just hope it doesn’t include David Arquette and color-coded werewolves!

Final Crisis #4 is definitely going to be a must-read on the stands this week. Darkseid has unleashed the Anti-Life Equation on the Earth. His forces are getting closer and closer to conquering the Earth as heroes around the world fight off his forces and brainwashed friends alike. While Final Crisis might be an eye-rolling concept, it’s turning into out unexpected outcome after outcome. Will evil truly win this time?

Final Crisis: Submit also features Black Lightning and the Tattoo Man trying to save their families from the carnage of Darkseid. With these two characters forced to work together to save their loved ones, expect plenty of interesting twist and turns along the way.

That’s it for this week, but with two major crossovers entering their endgames, you certainly have enough to keep you preoccupied!
