    Comic Rundown: Reboots and Werewolves
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Jul 29th, 2008

First off, I apologize for my absence on the site this past week. I know I submitted a Comic Rundown, but it looks like I missed a heckuva Dark Knight discussion which followed afterwards.

I do have a big announcement to make. For the past three weeks, I was engaged in the comic pitch contest Direct 2 Development at Zeroes 2 Heroes. It was literally a neck-and-neck competition (more on that later.)

On Friday, I found out I won, and my supernatural buddy comedy Bat & Wolf will be made into a twenty-two page professional comic book.

We now return to your regularly scheduled Comic Rundown (but seriously check out Zeroes 2 Heroes - if not for me, then for Reboot, which Z2H has acquired and produced a comic to pave the way for several feature-length films).

The Skrulls try their luck at invading Wakanda in Black Panther’s three-part Secret Invasion tie-in. Gotta like the cover, which has T’Challa triumphantly holding a Skrull’s head - and just his head. In a time where typical Marvel protocol is to just draw every character as a Skrull, that’s something you don’t see every day.

If you have Skrull fatigue, Fantastic Four: True Story might be your cup of tea, as the True Story has the FF travelling into the worlds of fiction on an adventure - and experiencing crossovers with Dante, Sense and Sensibility and Willie Lumpkin!

But if you don’t have Skrull fatigue, there’s always Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four #3, which has the Fantastic Four escaping one fire (an army of imposter Skrulls) and entering into another - namely Reed Richard’s Negative Zone prison for non-registered heroes and villains. Yeah - I’ll bet Ben and Johnny are real happy Reed built that thing!

For Planet Hulk fans, Skaar: Son of Hulk #2 picks up where World War Hulk’s explosive beginning left off - with Skaar, the son of the Hulk, trying to find his way through a  war-torn intergalatic empire. Looks like a very Conan-esque execution from here - and a plenty awesome one as well.

Okay, Marvel barely got by with Brand New Day, so now they’re really pushing it with Brand New Day: Extra, which takes a “deeper” look into Spider-Man’s new world, which begs the question - what have the Spider-Man writers been doing for the last six months?! The one-shot also features the return of one of Spider-Man’s most “unforgettable” foes - Hammerhead?! Riiiiiiight.

True Believers looks interesting. The series features a team of cyber-powered counter-culture superheroes who challenge cover-up’s all over the globe. With the Marvel Universe looking like a more “secretive” place the longer this crossover continues, these new heroes should have plenty to do in the next couple months.

Like Manhunter a couple weeks ago, DC is launching another of its heroes into the immigration issue - Blue Beetle. Written by Fables scribe Matthew Sturges, the new storyline establishes Blue Beetle as the hero of a border town, a move complicated by the involvement of Intergang in the struggle. This is a pretty original idea - ironic while Marvel fights outer space shape shifters for the next couple months, its DC which moves to the street level. Definitely recommended.

Justice Society of America Annual #1 finds Power Girl transported “home” to Earth-2, back to a world resembling the DCU pre-Crisis. Alex Ross once again pens an impressive cover in a series which keeps getting better and better.

For any fan of DC magic, Reign in Hell looks awesome. Lord Satanus is battling Neron, and various DCU heroes have been drafted into the conflict in the middle of Hell. Now they have to ask themselves what they fight for - the devil they know, or the one they don’t? I can’t make out much of the cover (darn new DC navigation), but with Dr. Occult and others appearing in the series, this looks pretty sweet.

That’s all for this week (isn’t it enough). Next week I’ll be back with a new review and plenty of comics!
