Comic Book Resources has reported that dead tree comic superstar Michael Turner has passed away at age 37 after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.
Turner was one of the biggest names in American comics, and made a name for himself as the definitive Witchblade artist during the 90’s. Turner eventually broke away from Image Comics to found Aspen Comics, a line of his own creation, which was quite successful. Turner had also done work for the big two in recent years, providing an incredible amount of fantastic covers for Marvel and DC books.
Turner’s battle with cancer ended on Friday night, and came after several years of remissions and relapses. Turner had surgeries to remove large portions of bone from his hips and pelvis. Through it all, Turner kept drawing, even going back to redraw pages he was not satisfied with during his recoveries.
Turner was also had a reputation as a wonderfully nice man, and was well-liked among his peers and fans, whom he always treated with respect. The CBR article lists sites where donations can be made in Turner’s name.
From a fan’s perspective, this is truly awful news. I loved Turner’s unique and sketchy style, which was dynamic and detailed. He was an inspiration and a role model for so many young artists, and his battle with cancer was incredibly inspiring. Michael Turner was an artist full of life, brimming with talent and determination, and his loss will leave a huge void in the industry, as well as in the hearts of his fans.
