I do have to admit, I actually kinda liked the “inspiration” for this particular strip when I first saw it. Although it does smell of CAD trying for that elusive sense of “relevance,” as if it were some sort of shameful thing to be a gag-a-day gaming comic and Tim suddenly felt a need to do something “meaningful” with the characters… when I first saw the CAD strip I was like “Holy crap, really?” At first I thought it was pretty neat the way it was handled, but the more I thought about it, the less enamored of the idea I became. I mean, really, how can CAD ever go back to what it was after something like this? Bringing something as heavy as a miscarriage into a gag strip is a surefire “point of no return” for that comic; just ask Funky Winkerbean.

Oh well… at least no one can accuse CAD of being a PA clone anymore. PA would never do this. Still, it does seem to have had its desired effect (it’s gotten people talking about CAD). Really, though, I’m numb to these sorts of “dramatic” turns in comic strips, web or otherwise; it’s become almost a cliché to do storylines like these, and it really ruins their effectiveness. And when they come out of nowhere, like with CAD’s miscarriage angle, it only smells of an author desperate for attention any way he can get it.

The parody strip is both well-done and well-targeted. Anyone who knows CAD or keeps up on current doings in major webcomics will immediately recognize what’s being mocked, and even those who don’t necessarily “get it” will probably love the gag (even if they’re left scratching their heads as to why the strip is arranged the way it is). Two thumbs and two big toes up!

Thanks, Devin, I’m glad you liked it. I was really worried about how this strip would go over with the general populace — I’m okay with it now, seeing it in its final form, but I really considered scrapping it at the last moment.

To me, it seemed that Tim chose the easy way out, and in the most cliche of manners. I’m sure that in a month or two, CAD will have returned to the status quo, and this whole arc mostly forgotten about. It’s the only way that CAD can continue without totally becoming something different. And, unlike PVP (which has really undergone a transformation in the past year or so), Tim’s characters don’t have the depth to successfully make that type of change.

It’ll be interesting to see where Tim decides to take his comic — based on his writing skills, if he tries to do a character-driven story, he’ll fail spectacularly. At least he can write a funny strip about 25% of the time.
