A while ago we told you that AVG was going to get rid of the free edition its popular antivirus software, this was incorrect. Well, more appropriately, we were mistaken along with everyone else on the planet.
The notice that popped up on the screen of an AVG user saying that the old 7.5 version would not be supported had a link that took users to a page comparing the paid and free version of the software. However, the link for the free version of the 8.0 release was hidden at the bottom of the page and many people missed it. This is a trick that many software providers with free versions of their software use to increase revenue, it’s dirty but effective.
In an interview, global security strategist for AVG Larry Bridgewell, told IT Pro “We have no plans to ever do away with the free version”. He went on to say “We appreciate that the internet is now such as major part of our lives and people need to be online but might not be able to afford the cost of the paid for version, We believe that everybody needs protection.” This, children, is what we call spin. It happens everyday in politics. People are try to squeeze a dime out of the public and get caught. Then they turn around and schedule a press meeting to explain that they’re really saints, you just haven’t realized it.
So thank you, AVG, for saving countless of home computer users from their wallets and the scourges of the Internet. It would have been nice if you would have tried to squash the non-free rumor when it got started, four months ago.
If you’re interested in getting the free version of AVG again, just follow this link. It will take you to the website for AVG Free.
