What would you do if you could have eternal life? What if something existed that could grant that? What would you do to get it? Well, some rough and tumble cow pokes (Think Vash the Stampede, but not quite) are in fact in search of such things. Welcome to the dry Western sands of the world of Zombie Powder.
This manga I had never even heard about, which is odd considering Hida is the creator of the famous Bleach series everyone knows. Upon the first reading, I was mildly interested. We have what looks to be a tough gunslinger in a trench coat, with long hair that is somewhat spiky. He seems to be rather tough and the coat makes for a flashy entrance into a new town… after getting off a bus. Yet, just when you get used to this idea his coat gets stuck in the doors of the bus and as it drives away the main lead runs off with the bus backwards. Amusing antics, to be sure.
After having read that, I thought this manga might be one of those mixed types, where it’s serious for a while but later breaks out the jokes and refreshes the mind, after a series of serious issues. Turns out I was right in my theory.
The story, in and of itself, seems to be solid enough to be believable, and the first interesting character the lead encounters becomes instant sidekick. That provides even more fodder to make fun of the leading gunslinger.
As the story plows along, we soon learn that the gunslinger has had a long time partner that gives him his tips. A tall man with glasses, and an extremely high intelligence, that oddly enough is attracted to chest size on females. This little fact one must remember, because by the time they move on to the next town in volume two they come across Wolfina, a young journalist with the chest size of Dolly Parton. She’s agile, she’s quick, and her weapon…is a camera. Right, I forgot. She’s a witty journalist… Why hasn’t her back snapped in half yet? What she’s packing in her chest area looks too large for such a small waist.
Overall, it actually made for a very amusing read.
Art:
Art was pretty decent, my only gripe is again Wolfina’s chest size, but I really should let it slide. It should be expected that most females in both the anime and manga worlds are going to have a large chest in most productions and creations. It’s just a personal gripe, and I really shouldn’t let it bother me. However it does.
Overall rating:
For Vash the Stampede fans, I can recommend this since I was reminded of the lovable Vash in the first volume.
Other Information: According to my sources, there are only three volumes.
Side note: After a long hiatus due to personal real life issues, most which have been taken care of, and others which have yet to be dealt with, the Caldi-Chan is Back. Expect updates on Tuesdays from now on.
