This is news you’ll either love or hate. On one hand, you’ve got one of gaming’s best stories; on the other, it’s a movie, and gaming movies haven’t fared well at all.
But the fact that Gore Verbinski (The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), as well as screenwriter John Logan (The Aviator, Sweeney Todd, and Gladiator — all excellent films), is attached to the project brings me (cautious) hope. The very fact that Verbinski took a movie based on a Disney World ride and turned it into one of the biggest film trilogies in the last million years is saying something. Ken Levine, the creator of BioShock, will helping Verbinski in an as-yet unannounced role.
I don’t want to get my hopes up just yet. After all, Pirates 2 & 3 were kinda… messy. But then again, this may just be the movie that’ll bring about a renaissance of gaming movies much the same way that X-Men rescued the superhero genre. I suppose we won’t really know until the opening weekend grosses roll in.

There’s one thing working in his favor - movies based on games can scarcely get worse. When you’re at rock bottom, the only direction to go is up, after all…

You really want to tempt the fates like that? Are you sure this is really the bottom?
