As I was making my daily round through my favorite gaming blogs, I came across this piece of news that literally made my heart jump and “squeee!” in a fangirlish manner.  A sequel to my all-time favorite game has been in the works.  But, there’s a catch…

Michael Ancel (the creator of the original) and a small team of about twelve have been doing pre-production work on the game for about the last year.  However, UbiSoft, who owns the property, hasn’t yet approved the project for full production.

BG&E was a beautiful game, well-loved by critics and gamers alike.  Unfortunately, it was released at the same time as several blockbuster games such as Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Halo, and ironically enough, UbiSoft’s Prince of Persia (which even more ironically used the Jade Engine built for BBG&E).  It didn’t sell well, thereby crushing any chances for an immediate sequel.

But today, I think that there’s enough interest that a sequel could sell.  Firstly, even gamers who’ve never played BG&E know about, thanks to its rabid fans (such as myself).  Secondly, storytelling in games has become more important as the majority of gamers are older — BG&E featured a great story told in such a way that was really ahead of its time.  Thirdly, UbiSoft has been rolling in the cash lately, so I believe there’s minimal financial risk for them.  At the very least, they’d earn a lot of respect from gamers.

IF you’re the head of decision making at UbiSoft, please greenlight this.  I’ll have your babies if you do.  Even though that’s physically impossible, I WILL FIND A WAY TO MAKE IT WORK.
