Barring the developments on last week’s Skullwatch, it’s been a pretty slow week for comics, but as Secret Invasion pumps up and Annihilation: Conquest reaches a head, I have a feeling that’s all going to change.
I gotta give Zeb Wells credit for the title of his Amazing Spider-Man #556 - “Sometime It Snows in April.” Nope, the Prince reference was totally lost on me - but the irony wasn’t. Looking in the winter-battered weather forecast this week, that’s exactly what’s on our plate in the Midwest - its good to see the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man isn’t getting off easy with a round of warmer comic book panels.
The big news (for me anyway) is Nova #12. This comic book is easily one of the most exciting for me, and the bad-ass comic book cover shows the once New Warrior b-character at his best. The story ropes into Annihilation: Conquest as Nova tries to reach the parents of the Phalanx with a reluctant Warlock in tow and a giant robot on their tale.
I’m really glad to see the classic Blue Beetle - Ted Kord - back in action in Booster Gold #8. The comic has reached a head by bringing back BB thanks to the time travel screw-ups of Booster Gold, and while the change is probably not likely to last after the story ends, it’s great to see the buddy comedy of Justice League International back in action.
Justice Society of America #14 also finds the new team pitting against the one guy in the entire DCU I’m really not anxious for them to meet - Gog - the main villain of Kingdom, who has been slaying godly superheroes and villains left and right lately. Looks like the full team’s in on this, so the results should be interesting.
There’s also the rise of the new Titans, written by Judd Winnick. The team brings back the original Titans - Nightwing, Starfire, Donna Troy, Beast Boy, Raven - after the supposed death of the previous Titans. I’m not sure how I feel about this, because I’m pretty sure the previous Teen Titans aren’t dead - their book is still running. It’s a bit confusing to have two Titan books running simultaneously with little explanation, but seeing the original line-up back in action is worth it - for now.
