Written regular Iron Fist co-writer Matt Fraction, it’s a pretty good book. The one-shot traces the mysterious Prince of Orphan’s encounters with Danny’s grandfather - the Golden Age Iron Fist, seen here as a two-fisted, and double-gunned pulp hero. Up until Young Avengers Marvel didn’t have sidekicks, and outside of the Invaders, Marvel didn’t much of a Golden Age - until now. It’s good to see Marvel starting to gain ground on DC.
For the Marvel side, Mark Bagley concludes his penciling run on Mighty Avengers as the team faces off with the horrors of Castle Doom - and, you guessed it, the Secret Invasion.
Meanwhile, Ms. Marvel #25 stipulates - you guessed it - that Ms. Marvel may indeed be a Skrull, or at least, that’s what her boss Tony Stark thinks. Because he was right about that whole Civil War thing . . .
Of course, the New Avengers are also wrought with Skrull-dom as Maya Lopez aka Echo searches for a Skrull infiltrator in her team.
I really wish Night Thrasher of New Warriors was a Skrull because he’s as shady as they come, tip-toeing around a super-plan to gain the trust of his team. He apparently comes clean about the plan this issue - I just hope it’s as jaw-dropping as the solicitations and many, many foreshadows lead.
And we knew it had to happen sometime . . . Ultimate X-Men #92 features . . . Ultimate Onslaught. What happened to just plain ol’ Ultimate Toad or even Ultimate Cable? How’d we get this far, and do we want to see the results? Robert Kirkman (Marvel Zombies, Invincible) hasn’t let us down yet, so I’ll stick around to find out.
A de-powered Magneto and a comatose Xavier take center stage in X-Men: Legacy #209. Frankly, I can’t see how interesting that conversation will be, but with Divided We Stand making Messiah Complex look like a kiddie ride all over the place, this is still one issue to buy if the chance presents itself.
As Countdown to Crisis continues to drag on . . . and on . . . and on . . . one journey does reach a close, with Countdown to Adventure following the reunited adventures of 52 compatriots Adam Strange, Starfire and Adam Strange. These two were a pretty awesome team in 52 - and probably one of the best things about the book - so seeing their latest adventure in San Diego seems pretty interesting.
Green Lantern #29 also begins “Secret Origin”, which follows Hal Jordan in the beginning of career as another GL investigates the late Albin Sur and his obsession with the key prophecy at the heart of the last year’s Sinestro Corp Wars as well as at the head of the Guardian’s latest scheme.
That’s it for this week. Thursday’s my birthday so maybe I’ll get some more comics. If so, I’ll review them in my column next week.
