For those of you who don’t know, the Acid test is a page that is built to test the rendering ability of a browser. The latest version was the Acid2 test and it was a big deal when IE8 passed this test. Something Firefox 2.0 and IE7 cannot claim, although apparently Firefox 3.0 is able to do it. Now that all major browsers have agreed to support the Acid2 test, the Acid3 test has been released and no browser has been able to pass it yet. At least this should keep the develepors on their toes.
So far the closest one to pass the Acid test has been Safari 3.0.4-5523.15 with a staggering 87/100, meaning that is passed 87 out of 100 of the tests ran on the Acid3 test page. Don’t get too cocky though, Mac fans, Safari 3.0.4 got a 39/100. The next three highest scores were all by beta versions of popular web browsers (opera 9.5 beta 1, Firefox 3.0 beta 3 and Firefox 3.0 beta 2) with 60, 59, and 55 of 100 respectively. The only other stable version browser to get over 50/100 was Firefox 2 which scored exactly 50/100 or 50%.
Konqueror didn’t even get to take the test, it crashed upon navigating to the test page. IE6 did barely better causing a script error window to pop up on loading, after the OK button was clicked the score went to 12/100 though. Konqueror, however, did pass the Acid2 test which is something IE6 or 7 cannot claim. In fact, IE7 was deemed the worst render of the Acid3 test, and beat out IE6 on the Acid2 as well in terms of poor performance. Acid2 was designed to test the CSS rendering power of a browser, but Acid3 takes it one step further and tests the browser’s DOM Scripting capabilities as well as testing the rendering capabilities of CSS, SVG, and webfonts. For more information on the Acid3 test, click here.

On Linux, Firefox 2.0.0.12 scores a pathetic 50/100, while Opera 9.50 Beta 3 fares a bit better, at 60/100.
For reference’s sake. Opera also rates a perfect or near-perfect result on the Acid2 test (sadly, it doesn’t spit back a numeric score like Acid3), while Firefox is glitchy still. (Same versions in both cases.)

If it takes as long to be recognized as Acid2, we should see 100/100 scores for Acid3 by around IE30 and Firefox12.1 and hopefully Konqueror will get on the ball soon and be the first to pass Acid3. I’m not holding my breath though.
