    Serious Vunerability Found in Firefox
Posted by Migo on Feb 10th, 2008

Version 2.0.0.12 of the popular web browser Firefox has been found to have a serious vulnerability to directory transversal by default. This vulnerability could give hackers access to your computer. More can be found at this article by the Hacker Webzine. For right now it’s suggested that you either switch to a new browser or use the NoScript extension for Firefox found here.

Does this affect all versions of Fx, or is it OS-specific?

Regardless, if someone reading this is looking for an alternative browser to use until this hole is patched, Opera makes a decent choice. It’s not FLOSS (but rather free-beer closed source), but it is cross-platform and generally immune to IE and Fx vulnerabilities. Just a suggestion.

I’m unsure as to whether it is OS-specific or not, but I’m assuming no just to be on the safe side. Opera is a good closed-source alternative though. For you Mac users out there there’s always Safari (Windows version available in beta). There’s also K-Melon, which is FLOSS, for the Windows folks, as well as the Mozilla browser itself. For all of you out there running a Unix-based OS, I don’t think I need to tell you all about your options. However, if you’re unaware of what’s out there here’s a list.
