    FreeBSD 7.0 Released
Posted by Migo on Feb 29th, 2008

Most Unix-like operating systems run either Gnome, KDE, or both. And the newest release of FreeBSD, version 7.0 that was release February 27th, is no different in that regard. It’s still running KDE3.5.8 but that is because BSD distributions tend to stability over bleeding edge software any day. It is running Gnome 2.20.2 however, and that’s still relatively new, so I guess you can have a little old along side your little new.

The announcement was released on the 27th and features some big improvements. Nothing really cosmetic from what I could tell from the brief announcement and release notes documentation, but enough to know that peak performance improvements as high as 350% during normal workloads and 1500% under high loads is nothing to sneeze at.

For more information about FreeBSD 7.0 you can check out the announcement, release notes, or the readme file. For more information about FreeBSD in general, go to freeBSD.org, and if you’re a FreeBSD newbie go to their newbies page where they explain how to get started.
