Comic Rundown: Who Do You Trust and What Do You Buy?
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Feb 12th, 2008

I really need to start picking up Booster Gold. It’s one of those things you remember the moment you drive away from the comic book strip. Anyway, the current issue - Booster Gold #0 - finds Booster time-traveling right into the continuity cleaner Zero Hour - and facing off with the supervillain Parallax. This could be interesting, considering how much reconning has been done to the latter character, changing Parallax from dark side Hal Jordan to the living embodiment of fear.

Connor Hawke is in a coma - leading a heavy toll of drama on the pages of Green Arrow/Black Canary #5. This issue also features art from Amanda Conner (Gatecrasher, Green Arrow/Black Canary Wedding Special). I’d really like to see Conner stay - she’s one of my favorite artists - but I think I remember she’ll be doing another major comic art project on the horizon.

Green Lantern Corps #21 continues to tie deeply into its parent title by investigating the Alpha Lanterns - Green Lanterns who have chosen to commit all to the Corps by undergoing a mysterious transformation. But this process seems to have side-effects Hal and John are deftly opposed to.

Salvation Run #4 has two of the biggest gorilla supervillains - Grodd and Monsieur Mallah - going at it. I don’t know what more you could possibly want.

And finally on the DC side, there’s Wonder Woman #17, the finale of Gail Simone’s first arc on the character. I’ve never been so glad to see a book selling out as Wonder Woman - the archetypal character’s place among the Top Three has been restored, and what’s more, it’s really good!

The Ultimates team of Bryan Hitch and Mark Millar are on Fantastic Four. This is one of the most exciting creative teams in comics history, but after Civil War, I’m just not sure I’m excited to see the results . . . especially when they are billed as “The World’s Ultimatest Comic Magazine.” What’s wrong with just having these two guys on Fantastic Four instead of trying to make things Ultimate again?

The bigger story here is actually Fantastic Four: The Lost Adventure, which picks up off an unfinished Stan Lee/Jack Kirby tale, with writing by Lee and art by the late Kirby, Joe Buscema and Joe Sinnott. Pass or fail, this is sure to be a nostalgic look to the past as the comic enters new territory.

New Avengers #38 picks up where the annual left off, as the team is left reeling from Doctor Strange’s sudden departure as well as Jessica Jones’ fleeing to Tony Stark for protection. It’d be interesting if neither Jessica nor Luke were Skrulls, but just suffering from the ill-effects of Elecktra revelation - so far, Brian Michael Bendis has done pretty well with Secret Invasion’s lead-in - I’m willing to give him a little more rope.

There’s also the Nova Annual, which finds Nova on the planet of the Technarchy - a Chris Claremont creation which inspired the Phalanx - looking for a way to fight the latter’s infestation of the galaxy in Conquest. I can’t say enough good things about this comic book - pick it up and read. Action, humor and many other things big hype projects lack are found within.

Wolverine #62 ties in with the fallout of Messiah Complex as well as Wolverine’s vendetta with Mystique apparently. Not really sure why he has a vendetta with the blue-skinned shapeshifter, but there ya go.

There’s also X-Factor #28, which ties into Divided We Stand, as Wolfsbane leaves the team for X-Force, a team secret even to X-Factor. There’s also more on Maddrox’s condition after traveling to Bishop’s future. This is one comic I would love to get it didn’t evaporate the moment it hit the stands at my local comic store! Oh well, there’s always trades.

Of course, there’s X-Force #1, which has a pretty awesome cover. It’s surprising Wolverine has never really lead an X-Team much in the main Marvel continuity, so the results should be interesting, as the team roster consists primarily of loose cannons and loners. I really liked Christoper Yost and Craig Kyle’s take on New X-Men, so I’ll definitely tune into this.

    That’s it for this week!
