Warner Bros backs Blu-Ray, HD format war continues to annoy
Posted by CMorrison on Jan 4th, 2008

More studios seem to be choosing sides in the next-gen DVD battle, with Warner Bros now exclusively backing Blu-Ray as of May of 2008. Bringing such high-powered franchises as Batman and Harry Potter to Blu-Ray is surely a boon to the format after losing Paramount and Dreamworks to HD-DVD last year, but as I sit and look at the format war I can’t help but think that at this point, both formats are going to be irrelevant before either takes hold. Consider that for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray to ‘win’ this battle, they have to beat out regular DVD sales, and friends, that’s not going to happen for years to come. By that time, digital downloads will be much more commonplace, and with news of in-development technologies such as TB (terabyte) discs making the rounds, I can’t help but think that taking a wait-and-see attitude toward the current round of HD-format discs might not be such a bad place to be.

I see no point in switching to an HD format if even the HD players can play normal DVDs. I’m not going to switch. No one I know is going to switch. It is great that they came out with new technology, I’m all for progress, but blueray and HD don’t really change much. People look at them and see a disk. I imagine that to most of the (un)educated populace a disk is a disk is a disk. Why get one disk which is more expensive when you have a cheeper one that ALSO has all the movies you want. :D

While I have switched to an HD DVD player, it wasn’t because I felt strongly about either player. I switched because I caught a sale. They’re nice, but ultimately unless you’ve got a combo format player you’re better off waiting until the entire “format war” is settled and a winner is declared.

It’s amazing, you figure we would’ve learned from the VHS vs Beta fight back late 70s/early 80s. Hopefully we won’t have to wait quite as long for this war to finish up.
