January 28th marked the 50th anniversary of the LEGO block. Gizmodo has a pretty cool timeline of the life of the LEGO block so far, from the beginning all the way to the 50th anniversary set which features a man on the box that looks like he’s never gotten out of the basement. Very cool, but a little unsettling.

If you think about it, LEGO has to be the ultimate in backwards compatibility. LEGO blocks that were made in 1958 will still connect to the company’s most recent creations, and even their “Duplo” preschool sets (or whatever they may be called these days) will link up to standard bricks. (Don’t you just shudder to think what may have happened if a company with the mindset of a Microsoft had been behind LEGO? You’d have to keep buying new sets every two years if you wanted to keep the same models, because each time out the bricks would be sufficiently different enough to not work with the older sets!)
