    Cult Classics: The Princess Bride
Posted by Migo on Dec 17th, 2007

“Now, mostly dead is slightly alive. Now, all dead…well, with all dead, there’s usually only one thing that you can do. What’s that? Go through his clothes and look for loose change.”

This 1987 film just recently released its 20th anniversary edition DVD. So I thought now would be a great time to rehash it for nostalgia sake and introduce it to the uninitiated.

Directed by Rob Reiner and based off the 1973 book by William Goldman, The Princess Bride sported a cast with some pretty big names under its belt. Andre the Giant, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage, and Peter Falk just to name a few. Despite the synopsis, this movie isn’t a chick flick. Granted, “true love” is the overall theme of the movie, but this isn’t your standard love story.

The story starts off with Fred Savage as a kid home who has been kept home from school due to being sick. Peter Falk, of Colombo fame, plays his grandfather and the narrator of our story. It’s in the pages of this book that the story really takes place. A story about a princess, a pirate, abnormally large rodents, polydactyly (that means extra fingers), and true love.

I know it’s over 20 years old now, but I won’t be giving a full synopsis of the movie in case there are people haven’t seen it. I will leave you with this bit of advice though, if you don’t own this movie already and you’ve never seen it definitely rent it at the very least. The humor, while obscure at points, still manages to hit its mark consistently and this film is one of the most quotable I have ever seen. If you don’t enjoy a good laugh, however, you should probably steer clear of this movie and check your pulse because you may be dead.

For those of you out there who have never seen “The Princess Bride”… what’s wrong with you? It’s definitely a classic that entertains on so many levels. Swashbuckling, comedy, romance, and even Andre the Giant. Plus, as Migo pointed out, there are just so many quotable lines.

Anyways… have fun storming the castle!

I just adore this movie. Everyone should have to watch it because they would love it. As long as they have a heartbeat, anyway. :D

I could quote this movie all day, probably have, if you add up all the the times I’ve quoted it, it might be closer to a month. :D

I never had the chance to watch it, but I’ve heard so many good things that I will have to rectify that. Let’s see when I manage to do so.

      :-)

I found out on December 23rd that my sister and brother-in-law have never seen it. I of course berated them for not seeing such a classic, and they got another earful when they tried to compare Jim Carrey’s “Grinch” movie to it and considering it a classic (based on a classic? Yes. A classic itself? No).

As soon as I left their house I immediately went to Wal-Mart and bought a copy for them for Christmas.

They will watch it. Oh yes, they WILL watch it.
