Psst… Hey, Wanna Buy an Offshore Fort?
Posted by Devin de Gruyl on Nov 10th, 2007

What’s that you say? You’ve always wanted your own Fortress of Solitude/Evil/Insert Sinister-Sounding Adjective Here, but could never be bothered to scare up enough slave labor to build one? No problem - we’ve got just the thing in prefab housing!

Namely, your very own offshore fortress! (Wouldn’t you love to see them give one of those away on The Price is Right…)

For the low, low price of $8.2 million, you too can have your very own outpost in the middle of nowhere, perfect for plotting world domination or just as a way to escape annoying neighbors, relatives, and other questionable “comforts” of civilization.

The No Man’s Land fortress, located off the coast of Portsmouth in the UK, was originally built to defend England against a hostile French army. It’s since been renovated and used as everything from a private residence to a luxury hotel, fully self-sufficient (a generator for power, a bore to the sea floor for fresh water, and so on) and with enough amenities to keep anyone from longing for the mainland.

It’s also got some serious “geek cred,” being used as a location setting for a classic Doctor Who serial (The Sea Devils, from the Pertwee era).

Just the thing for all you budding Dr. Evils out there…

Is it sad that I’ve actually looked into buying my own island for purposes of world domination? I’ve found them much cheaper, but we’d call them “fixer uppers”.
