    Posted by CMorrison on Nov 27th, 2007

    The November Xbox 360 back-compatibility list for original Xbox titles is now available for perusal, and to be frank, it’s the most disappointing update I’ve been witness to in a long time. Observe:

    * Zathura

    Outside of Indiana Jones and Armed and Dangerous, there’s really not a whole lot worth bothering with here…where are top-shelf games like Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, Beyond Good and Evil, and Enclave? Almost seems that by the time these games become back compatible, we’ll be buying the Xbox 720 and getting ready to do the back-compatibility waiting game all over again.

      See, I’ve never understood the whole concept of the 360’s backwards compatibility in the first place. Why even have these updates to begin with, and not simply make the damn thing compatible with the older games out of the box? It certainly worked for Sony!

      Then again, you do have to remember the company we’re talking about here…

      CMorrison Reply:

      It’s a hardware vs software issue. The 360 hardware is an entirely different beast than the Xbox; full back-compatibility would likely require an additional Xbox chipset be included on the 360 mainboard which would simply add to the unit cost (the 60gig PS3 had near-full PS2 back compatibility because it had a PS2 chipset included; these are gone in the 40 and 80gig models resulting in no currently available PS3 system having full back-compatibility).

      Migo Reply:

      That’s not entirely true. Playstation.com has a backward compatibility search for the 60GB and 80GB systems. Apparently there’s quite a few problems with PS2 and PSX games having glitches, illegible text, artifacts, or just making the game useless on the new system.
