According to a survey given by King Research, about 90% of IT professionals still have doubts and concerns about using Vista. These numbers mirror another survey given earlier in the monthy by Forrester. Interestingly enough, 44% of the professionals surveyed have considered switching to non-Windows operating systems, such as Linux and Mac, in order to avoid migrating their systems to Vista.
Mac is, of course, the most popular alternative weighing in at around 28% of the total converts. Followed closely by Red Hat at roughly 25%, again at no big surprise. SUSE Linux and Ubuntu both managed to grab about 18% each. Leaving nine percent naming various other Linux distributions while only four percent were undecided.
Virtualization was cited as one of the technologies making it possible to start moving away from Microsoft. Two-thirds said that virtualization has already made it easier for them to begin implementing alternatives.
Hurdles are still to come, however. Challenges like managing multiple operating systems and potentially having to learn a different set of management tools for each operating system have IT respondents to the survey worried. 60% of those who responded said they use management tools that do not support non-Windows environments.
Almost half of all those who took part in the survey said that the challenges of systems management in non-Windows operating systems was preventing them from seeking out alternatives. Looks like the open source community may have just found another project to work toward.
