    HD DVD for Under $100?
Posted by Migo on Nov 1st, 2007

    Toshiba HD-A2

According to Wal-Mart, yes. This Friday, that’s tomorrow kids, Wal-Mart will be having an In-Store Special where they’ll be selling Acer laptops with 1GB of RAM for $349, TVs for prices I don’t care about, and the big thing that caught my eye, Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD players for $98.87! This is normally a $300 piece of hardware, folks. So $99 is a pretty big deal.

Here is the link to the section on Wal-Mart’s seasonal site, which seems to be down (my guess is due to high traffic on a “secret” section). If you can get your hands on one of these bad fellas I’d suggest doing so ASAP. The player supports 1080i, but I’m not going to complain, most 1080p HDTVs have built-in adjustments for that sort of thing anyway.

Correct me if I’m wrong, since my understanding of the whole HD-DVD and various resolutions is minimal — HD-DVD’s native resolution is 1080i or p, right? I’ve heard that unless your television supports that, the picture will be downscaled to 480. If that’s the case, those of us with 720 LCD’s really wouldn’t have any reason to pick this up.

That, and… going to Wal*Mart, after all. You shouldn’t be going in there unless you absolutely have to.

      Migo Reply:

I did a little digging around and found the product specs on Circuit City’s website. This player natively supports 720p/1080i. So your TV could probably still get some use out of it. I’m just happy that I finally have something that supports 1080 (my TV is 1080p and my HD Cable is 480suck). If you’ve got a 1080p TV, as I mentioned in the article, conversion will most likely take place inside the TV itself.

Oh, did I forget to mention the HDMI cables, something I’ve yet to employee on my TV), and the upconversion for standard DVDs?

Needless to say, my happy but will be sitting at Wal-Mart prior to 8 o’clock so I don’t miss out. Otherwise, I’d never set foot in there. I’ve been Wal-free for a little over six months, so I think I can give myself a little wiggle room just this once.
