A while ago we reported that Warren Ellis, creator of the Transmetropolitan series as well as others, was starting a webcomic. Ellis has pegged the start date of FreakAngels as mid-February 2008, while the supplemental message board/online community went live today.
The message board layout may look familiar to some veteran WotG readers as it uses Vanilla, the forum we started playing around with before we settled on our current board. It’s not just about comics, however, the promise of diverse topics has come from Ellis himself. In his Livejournal he said:
“My interests are a lot broader than just comics, and so Whitechapel is more than just comics. There’s a section up there for use by the steampunks and retropunks, should they want it (FREAKANGELS has a lot of steam/retro stylings, as you’ll see next year, so it makes sense.) I’ve also created space for Second Lifers, the people who like following the mad science and signs of the apocalypse, music and art etc.”
If the body of work Ellis has put out so far is any sort of standard to hold FreakAngels to, then he’s definitely got his work cut out for him. Not to mention that 5 pages per week is a heck of a deadline and one for which I don’t envy either the writer or artist.
