One of the best comics to make the top ten in Bomb Shelter Comics’ Webcomic Idol was Dean Haspiel’s Fear, My Dear. Honestly, I thought this one would win the whole thing, it’s so good, and it was disappointing to see it go in the first round.
Fear, My Dear is the continuing adventures of Billy Dogma, Haspiel’s popular internet superhero who journey’s through karma and the human psyche, and blends it in with a real world setting. It results in hyperkinetic, wild storytelling that literally moves so fast that it’s easy to get lost; the strange thing about this is…you don’t. Haspiel’s storytelling style achieves so much in so little space without leaving its readers in the dust. It’s also the second chapter in Dogma’s story – the first is Immortal, a very Not-Safe-For-Work comic filled with love and insanity.
Haspiel is an incredible artist; he’s worked with American Splendor legend Harvey Pekar for the last few years, and the simple color scheme over his lively, almost rough art has a distinct visual impact. Haspiel adheres to one or two colors for each chapter in Billy Dogma’s story, giving each new installment a fresh feeling. The art almost has a black and white quality to it given this coloring style, but Haspiel works well in black and white, creating very clear, readable panels. It works very, very well.
He makes use of infinite canvas, keeping the site simple and easy to manage; the rest of Haspiel’s site is a bit daunting, though, with links aplenty. But we won’t nitpick on that, since the comic itself is silky smooth in the navigation department.
Basically, here’s the thing. Dean Haspiel is a professional comics creator offering people a fantastic, unique comic for free that happens to be more creative and original than just about everything else out there; you’d be a fool not to check it out.
If you liked that, try...
