Firing Squad, has an article on how to upgrade your PC to compete with higher end gaming rigs even if your budget is a little on the shrimpy side. According to them, for around $500 USD you can upgrade your PC into a lean mean newb-fragging machine.
One of the biggest ways the article suggests saving some dough is reusing what hardware you can. Things like the hard drive, keyboard, mouse, and monitor can be cannibalized back into your new machine while saving you a pretty nice chunk of change. For the wary few who think the motherboard and other necessities have been forgotten, think again. The boys over at Firing Squad took that into consideration too. This article assumes you’ll need new RAM, and motherboard which are part of the $500 budget.
These boys aren’t messing around either, they’ve got some better quality hardware going into this machine. AMD 64 X2 4000+, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboard, and OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel RAM. They also have suggestions on how to save even more money while sacrificing as little performance as possible by opting for alternative components. They tested these budget boxes side-by-side with some high end gaming rigs using Call of Duty 4, Crysis, and Unreal Tournament 3. While the high ends out performed the difference doesn’t really seem to be enough to justify the price difference of standard high end rigs.
Don’t believe me? Read the article for yourself, you may just find the inspiration to build up your system for a few hundred bucks.
