The latest version of the most popular Linux distrobution around, Ubuntu, was released today. Version 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon, brings with it all sorts of new features like the following:
- Gnome 2.20
- 3D Desktop effects
- NTFS writing
- scores of other upgrades found here
7.10 is only upgradeable from 7.04, though. So you’ll either need to upgrade to 7.04 then to 7.10 or just install 7.10 if you’re running anything 6.10 or below. If you’re running 7.04, however, instructions on upgrading can be found here.
Well, that’s about it for the initial update. I’ll be back with a review of the new edition sometime next week. After that we’ll all have to contain our excitement until the release, 8.04, which I hear is going to be the next LTS (long-term service) version with a support life of 04/2011, just less than Dapper (06/2011).
Enjoy the new distrobution, folks. If you’re not already running Ubuntu and you want to give it a try you can get it here. You’ll be able to download the latest version as well as other support versions of Ubuntu, buy a CD, or actually have them send you one for free!
The distro has a Live CD feature built into it, so you can just boot into the CD from your computer, check out the distrobution, and decide if you want to install it or not. No installation required to run it, no risk, no fuss. Just boot up, dive in, and restart your normal OS when you’re done. It’s all that easy and those of you new to Linux shouldn’t have anything to be worried about in that case.
That’s all I’ve got for now. Happy computing!

After finishing the upgrade last night I can tell you I am very happy with Gutsy already. It’s just a bunch of minor things for me, really — better display interface, and so on. But it was enough of a change to refresh the Ubuntu experience for me. Everything is working smoothly.

And just for anyone who was wondering, the 8.04 release will be dubbed… drum roll, please…
…”Hardy Heron.”
Thus continuing the alphabetical trip through the alliterative jungle (despite there already having been an “H” release, “Hoary Hedgehog,” a couple years back).

Considering they skipped from “H” to “B” to “D”, I guess the process isn’t as regular as we’d like to think, eh?
