I know, I know. My beat is usually video games, Linux, or the occasional sci-fi report. But I cannot resist this bit of news from the comics front.
In a press release, Marvel Comics announced that, indeed, Captain America will be returning in issue #34 of the eponymous series, even unveiling a new-look costume designed by Alex Ross (Marvels, Kingdom Come, and too many TPB and special covers to list).
Note, however, that I said “Captain America.” Not “Steve Rogers.” Like Generalissimo Francisco Franco, he’s still dead. (Sacreligious though it may seem, I actually agree with this to a certain extent. Even through the magic of comics, it’s been getting harder and harder with each passing year to justify keeping a character so firmly rooted in WWII around in the modern era, as the 1940s inexorably pass further into the distant past. Even on Earth-616, where it’s somehow never more than ten years since Reed Richards & Co. took their cosmic-ray bath no matter what the calendar reads, credulity can only be stretched so far.)
Instead, obviously, this Cap will be a newcomer. (This makes, what, the sixth or seventh different guy to ever don the red-white-and-blue long johns?) Oh, and he now carries a gun. You read that right. Apparently, Ross has based the new design on a series of bad, bad, bad Cap serials from the ’40s, in which Winghead didn’t have a shield but did pack heat.
Expect all this to arrive on newsstands in January. Expect the pile of death threats for Marvel boss Joe Quesada to get even higher, too — probably long before January.
But hey - at least it’s not Frank Castle, right?

Being a huge Cap fanboy I’m glad to see the character coming back. Still, in my mind the only Captain America is Steve Rogers. I think it’s something about keeping his old-fashioned morals while still beating the ever-loving crap out of the bad guys that always had me on his side. Hopefully they’ll be able to keep that with this newcomer.

I agree - Steve Rogers is Captain America. And with a 2009 movie planned, I don’t think we’ll have to wait a long time before he pops up again. Just don’t be fooled by the imitators - and no, I’m not talking about this new Captain America (I’m guessing Bucky, with the gun). I have a dreaded suspicion Steve Rogers will first return during this summer’s Secret Invasion, only to be revealed as a - surprise surprise - Skrull!
