My wife and I picked up a few GameCube games we’d missed out on as neither of us had been big Nintendo fans until we got our hands on a Wii. Needless to say, I now love my little white box of many lost hours.
One of the games my wife had picked up was Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles because she noticed it had a multi-player capability. She didn’t read, however, that you need the GameBoy Advance to access the multi-player game play. So, we had to quest for the GBA and link cables, which is harder than it sounds. I had to do a county-wide sweep for link cables and managed to find some at a Circuit City about 10 miles away.
At any rate, once we had all of our assorted gaming gear ready to go we plugged them in. Not sure if we could even use the GBA with the Wii as I couldn’t find any definitive articles on the subject, we waited. The flashing “Waiting for Connections” sign on the GBA was reassuring and worrying at the same time. I was reassured because the GBA seemed to be picking up the signal from the GameCube ports it has built-in, but I wasn’t sure it would get past that blinking sign.
Within a few seconds we were well on our way to taking the Wii back in time to the days of its predecessor, the Big Purple Lunchbox aka the Nintendo GameCube. We’ve had a ton of fun playing Crystal Chronicles over the weekend, in between bouts of cursing the boss battles and getting bonus objectives like “avoid damage”. It’s been an experience that makes me question why I ever went away from Nintendo in the first place. Sure they’re family friendly, but they’re catalogue of titles has been introducing more and more “big kid” games as well.
So, I’m writing this to set a difinitive answer once and for all. Yes, gamers can use the GameBoy Advance as a controller for GameCube games on the Wii. Wireless GameCube controllers will work with the Wii as well, apparently. The MadCatz MicroCon controllers I picked up work very well and only using two AAA batteries.
That means that, for the most part, Nintendo has managed to do more than make a gaming system that is completely backwards compatible with its predecessor. With the addition of the classic controller and Wii Shop Channel they’ve made a console that is compatible with every console the company has ever put out, along with the ability to play old Sega games, many other consoles from the past.
Definitely worth cost if you can find one. Hit up the forums and post your Wii Friend Codes up there. I’ve already posted mine.
