    Comic Rundown: Monsters and Messiahs
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Oct 30th, 2007

Well, the first thing I’m definitely getting this week is DC Infinite Halloween Special. I’m always a sucker for the seasonal comics, and I’m just glad DC is finally doing a Halloween comic to balance out the mirth and cheer of the Christmas one. With stories from Steve Niles, Mark Waid, Dan DiDio and . . . ummm . . . David Arquette, I hope this turns to a tradition for the DCU.

We’ve also got issue #2 of Countdown to Mystery, which features more on the birth of the new Doctor Fate, as well as Eclipso targeting Plastic Man through the one breaking point the elastic hero has: his son. The last issue was enough to leave me wanting more, so let’s see if Gerber and company can keep it up.

I’ll probably also check out Death of the New Gods #2, although you have to admit . . . that’s one depressing title, and I don’t need that kind of depression in my reading right now.

Also, more on Renee Montoya’s Question in Crime Bible: The Five Lessons of Blood #1. Can the new Question living up to her predecessor? I’ve been skeptical in the past, but I’d like to see what Greg Rucka and Tom Mandrake can accomplish here. Still, it won’t be the same without Vic Sage.

Alex Ross takes a co-writer chair with Geoff Johns when they add Kingdom Come’s Superman to the Justice Society roster  in Issue #10. Didn’t Infinite Crisis so away with quite a few Supermen? Why are they bringing one more to the fold, and wh does this tie into the so-called Final Crisis? I got nothing, but this is definitely on my buy list.

Plus, what Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a Lazarus Pit? Robin Annual #7 offers a glimpse into the upcoming Resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul . . . not quite sure if that’s a trick or a treat, but the stories offer several views of Robins past and present at Halloween.

I really need to pick up New X-Men #43. It’s a title that’s just been pushed to the side with the big events, but I can’t help but feel there’s an intriguing self-conscious feel to the new class of X. Taking place on the anniversary of House of M, this latest batch of X-Men . . . or what’s left of them . . . are hard-pressed to figure out just what’s in store for them after Civil War, Marauders, and now, Endangered Species.

Of course, the major event this week is X-Men: Messiah Complex, which will even further push New X-Men to the side. Claimed to be the event which will once again put X on the treasure map once more, this book isn’t just carrying a lot of hype - it’s carrying a promise that most fans are feeling NEEDS to be fulfilled. The story finds the X-Men, the Marauders and the Purifiers in a 3-way struggle to find the first mutant in House of M - get this one while you can, guys, cause its going fast.
