This is a little late, but the makers of Halo and Microsoft have gone their separate ways. The announcement was that, effective on October 1st, Bungie would be an independent game developer. Does this mean that Halo will be coming to the PS3/Wii anytime soon? Don’t hold your breath. Microsoft will retain a minor stake in the company as well as long-term rights to Halo.
Bungie was purchased by Microsoft back in 2000 setting up for the launch of the Xbox in 2001, largely for their work on Halo, which was an independent title at the time. So it’s a little strange, to me at least, that the split took place when it did, hot on the heels of the Halo 3 release.
“We’ll continue to make Xbox 360 games, and we’ll continue to make amazing games for Microsoft Game Studios,” Bungie clarified on its website. According to GamePro, when asked if they had any plans in the future to release titles for the PS3, Wii, and DS, a company representative was quoted as telling Next-Gen
“We haven’t really put any serious thought into that at all right now. Typically speaking, that opportunity could exist for us down the road… anything’s possible, but it’s too early to say. We don’t have any dev kits in the building for other platforms. There’s nothing like that going on right now.”
