There’s going to a Con and *going* to a con. The difference? When you are a casual fan, you will probably just go for one day, watch some anime to see if you want it, and if your budget will allow it you might even buy a few things in the dealers room. For such a casual fan, Saturday would be the best option, considering that the lines aren’t as long except for the Cosplay event which, in my experience, has been proven to be one of the more highly-anticipated to events.
Now for Ai-Kon 2007, I was able to acquire a full three day pass which I made full use of during the event. What is Ai-Kon? It is one of Winnipeg’s more popular anime conventions. (www.ai-kon.org) Its history is brief and simple. What started as a convention on the grounds of the University of Manitoba soon grew large enough to merit a move to a hotel back in 2004. In 2005, it was finally moved to the Winnipeg Convention Center where the numbers have gradually increased with each passing year, as it gains more popularity with the anime fan base.
This year marked the first convention with special guests of honor, Greg Ayers, and Vic Mignogna. Both well known as popular voice actors for various anime. During these three days, I was able to take photos, check out the dealers room, and even get some autographs. However, there is simply too much to go over in just one article, so let us take a trip down the more recent steps of Memory Lane and relive the three day event known as Ai-Kon.
Friday July 27th.
Since the first day, as with most conventions, is the beginning of new friendships, long lines, and people checking their schedules, it was no surprise to see the crowds of people, and hallway cosplayers. This year was met with several panels and various anime. Not to mention groups of people being asked to take photos of their costumes.
There were people to see, things to buy, and in general just out right fun socializing with people only seen once a year at this event. The dealers line was, as usual, incredibly long, with people waiting in groups as it moved steadily inside the treasure trove. Here you could find a vast collection of wall scrolls, anime, cd’s, toys, posters and just about anything any anime fan could ever desire.
Once inside, the treasure within is revealed and the anime fans wandered from table to table, store owners sold their goods and socialized with regulars from previous conventions. The room was rather large, however, one would not be able to tell with all the people milling around, and looking for their prized items they have been wanting. It was a sight for sore eyes, to see such a magnificent selection this year.
From there it was off to the Artists’ Alley, where locals sold their own goods, in the creative area. Such as artwork, also including creative kitty hats. Two of which this writer happily owns. After that, it was time to finally sit down and socialize with friends, old and new. This of course never gets dull, or boring. It seemed like none of us
could run out of anything to talk about.
It was during this time of socializing that several of us got involved with photo moments, sometimes actually running after cosplayers that caught our eyes. These photo moments are something I live for, simply because they are more then just a photo. They are proof of people who take great care in making their costumes, and enjoy the fun of it all. Some even go as far as posing for you if you ask nicely. All of these people are nice, and I happily consider most of them friends. So for all of us, these photos are simply memories of fun times.
As the day wore on, it was time to arrange for a ride home, of course before that even happens we all have to go out for a bite to eat. What good is a convention, when you do not go to a local eatery with good company? It is simply just a convention, that’s all. With this in mind, our large group of guys and one female head on over to Shannons Irish Pup, and we get to enjoy good food, some good drinks and great music by Winnipeg’s own Dust Rhinos. Even getting to meet with one of the band members.
In high spirits it’s time to head home at around midnight. Thus ending the first day of Ai-Kon. Not knowing what day two would have in store.
