Sure, you could drop sixty bucks on a copy of Madden 08… but why would you want to? It’ll just be outdated within a year anyway, and then you won’t be able to give your copy away (you should see the shelves of my local game store; they are literally lined with used copies of EA Sports games dating back to 2002, some stickered for as little as 99¢!)
Since you’re a geek anyway, why not do the geeky thing? Take an old, but classic, football game for the venerable NES — Tecmo Super Bowl — and hack the ROM to include updated players, teams, and rosters! Perhaps best of all, you won’t have to waste time learning convoluted control schemes that are almost, but not quite, as difficult to pull off as real football plays!
This site gives you all you need to know about Tecmo Super Bowl, including the necessary tools and info to update the circa-1991 team rosters to something a little more recent. If you’re at all interested in sports video games, it’s worth checking out. (Plus, it’s a damn sight cheaper than shelling out three Jacksons on a game that, if you’re lucky, will only be worth the price of a McDonald’s lunch this time next year…)
Breathing new life into 16-year-old NES cartridges… you gotta love the Internet sometimes, don’t ya?
(WARNING: The linked website does contain a link to a dumped ROM of the original NES Tecmo Super Bowl cartridge. By clicking on the link you agree to absolve WotG, its affiliates and its sponsors of any responsibility for your actions. Remember: Downloading ROM images of cartridges you do not own is ILLEGAL in many parts of the world. We merely show you the door; you do not have to enter.)
