Despite allegations that bloggers don’t try to “find things out” as Robert Novak, a conservative newspaper columnist, once said, the CIA and NSA have altered policies to show that they’re taking blogs seriously as are a growing number of public offices.
The CIA has updated the Freedom of Information Act to give bloggers the ability to qualify for special treatment that was once reserved strictly for newspaper reporters. And the NSA has issued a directive to its employees to reports leaks of classified information to the media “including blogs”, to quote the order. The trial of former White House aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby was the first to set this trend, issuing press credentials to bloggers.
Reactions on “The Blotter” at ABC News don’t seem to be in favor of this decision. I think they should keep something in mind though, the same as Mr. Novak. Bloggers haven’t screwed up so badly yet as to leak the name of a CIA operative. Thanks for giving us just a little more credibility, Mr. Novak.
