Arguably the most anticipated sequeal since The Empire Strikes Back, Starcraft II has been announced, and aside from causing enough excitement to level half of South Korea, it’s not going to play the same way as it’s predecessor. According to this report from Blizzard itself, the game is taking a more open approach, at least in its single player campaign.
While there is a deep story expected, as is the case with all Blizzard games, players will decide which scenarios and locations to tackle first; there is no straight set of missions like in Starcraft. Adding even more to the experience is the ability to interact with characters between missions. It appears that players can buy new units during this downtime, and the trailer reveals some new units, as well. Looks like the Goliath walker gets a brother, folks - a big bad brother…that can fly.
It comes as no surprise that the graphics are incredible. The cinematic menu sequences between missions are some of the best I’ve ever seen, and seem to blend in seemlessly to actual cutscenes. The new units just seem awesome…though a teensy bit derivative of some Warhammer 40K units. Dreadnought, anyone? Eh, those in the know already know Starcraft borrows heavily from that Games Workshop tabletop institution.
Good God, I want this game.
