PlentyOfCode.com has posted the top 25 open source projects on Microsoft’s CodePlex site. Mostly, it looks like the same sort of things that are being developed by a lot of the other open source communities, web apps, games, and development kits.
This usually wouldn’t be a big deal, but it shows that Microsoft can be a valid open source platform as well as support the open source community. Not to mention the fact that it doesn’t host abandoned projects, something SourceForge has been stuck doing for far too long. CodePlex also requires a project to have an Open Source Initiative-approved license, SourceForge does this as well. However, given Microsoft’s current track record and all the rumors of their shady darkened alleyway business practices, it’s impressive to see them playing by the FLOSS community’s rules.
The site posting the top 25 is currently down at the time of this post, but if you’re interested in the current top 10 in popularity why not swing by the CodePlex Project Directory, the top 10 are available on page-load, top 25 are available if you click the little “25″ at the top or bottom right of the page. You can also change the search to activity and view the 25 most active list that was posted on PlentyOfCode.com for yourself.

Are we sure this is the same Microsoft whose CEO/CTO/whatever title Ballmer holds just a few years ago compared FLOSS to communism? o_O
