Google Pack, a huge collection of software recommended by Google, has now added StarOffice to its list. Sun, creators of StarOffice, released the source code for its office suite in 2000. This source code later became the foundation for OpenOffice.org, an open source project sponsored by Sun.
StarOffice is a complete office suite with applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, math formulas and even a drawing application, much the same as OpenOffice.org. If supports most, if not all MS Office formats except those introduced in Office 2007, and can even export documents to PDF format right out of the box.
Normally, StarOffice would run you about $70, but it’s available free through the Google Pack. The installer for this impressive piece of office software is pretty large, around 140MB, so you probably shouldn’t try downloading it unless you’ve got a fairly fast internet connection.
There’s also a plugin-in that lets you synchronize local documents with Google Docs & Spreadsheets. This allows you to edit documents locally and offline, then synchronize and store them online. If you need a strong office suite, but can’t afford the price tag, this may be a great option for you.
