Comic Rundown: To Hell and Back With Supes and Skrulls
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Aug 7th, 2007

    What’s good this week?

Well, first of all, the collected edition of Batman and Son is exceptionally hard to pass up after seeing what a bad-ass Damion Wayne would make in Batman #666. Written by Grant Morrison, this series answers the age-old question - did Bruce really get it on with Talia Al Ghul, and if so, what if they had a kid? Only in this case, there is no what if - this is all in-continunity!

Black Adam: The Dark Age #1  shows what become of the quintessential anti-hero following 52, as he’s stripped of his powers and the most wanted man alive - especially after slaughtering an entire nation. One of the most complex characters in DC right now, you definitely don’t want to miss this. And considering Mary Marvel is getting worse and worse under the influence of Teth Adam’s powers, seeing Black Adam retake his throne might just beat the alternative.

I’d also recommend picking up Countdown to Adventure #1 just to see if they pick up with the priceless moment utterly wasted in the end of 52, with an exhausted Starfire passed out on Animal Man’s suburban lawn. One must wonder what his wife’s reaction will be.

Green Lantern #22 has a Parralax-possessed Kyle up against Hal Jordan, but the solitications promise something far worse - a traitor within the Guardian of the Universe.  Though I’m not too keen on anyone playing the Anti-Monitor card, this is one book which has kept me constantly guessing.

Can Superman #666 compete with Batman’s similarly numbered End of Days confrontation? Probably not, but if anyone could, it’d be Kurt Busiek and Walter Simmonson. Can anything good come out of “Superman goes to Hell”? We’ll just have to see.

On the Marvel side, Incredible Hulk #109 finds the fate of Amadeus Cho’s team of heroes, including Hercules, Angel and others, as they have to decide whether to stick it with the world-warring Green Genes after seeing what he has up his sleeve, and beneath Madison Square Garden. The idea of superheroes siding with the Hulk is the most compelling part of World War Hulk - let’s hope they don’t blow it.

New Avengers #23 lifts off where the last one ended, as the team has to deal not only with the betrayal of Spider-Woman - supposedly a Skrull infiltrator - but also the much-bayooed return of the Hood, a character apparently poised to take over the Kingpin’s place as supervillain chief. Can a character with this much hype really work? I have my doubts, but still, it is in Brian Michael Bendis’ capable hands.

That’s all for this week. With work right next to the comic book store, I’ll be sure to leave a shout-out if any one of these title woos or boos in the coming weeks.
