The first big release that caught my eye this week was Birds of Prey #109 - for better or worse without Gail Simone (who soons debuts on Wonder Woman), and has, for richer or poorer, Black Canary considering finally tying the knot with her perpetually on-and-off-again fling Green Arrow. The cover looks downright hilarious, now boosting the new creative team of Tony Beddard, Nicola Scott and Doug Hazzlewood. Oracle plays “Devil’s Advocate” to make sure Black Canary knows what she’s in for, and oh yeah, a New God dies (again? They’re dropping like flies!)
Green Lantern Corps #15 finally catches up with the chilling ramifications of the regular Green Lantern series - namely the big bruhaha with the Sinestro Corps. Not only does this issue pit the title characters against the other members of Sinestro’s team, but it also pits planet-sized GL Mogo against someone his own size! I don’t know about you, but I’m sold!
Metamorpho teams up with the new Aquaman in the latest Outsiders: Five of a Kind. Though I was disappointed where the first Nightwing/Captain Boomerang team-up left things, I’d be interesting to see how the new Arthur Curry handles teaming up with other superheroes. It seems like his addition to the Outsiders is all but assured, but I was certainly wrong the last time I picked up one of these crossovers.
On the Marvel side, Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men #22 seems to be running full circle, as the aliens of Breakword move to kill Colossus. And if the X-Men save their teammate, it might just mean the destruction of an entire world, if the vague prophecy of the first story-arc is to believed.
Cable and Deadpool #44 looks interesting. The last issue ended with Wolverine slicing off Deadpool’s head - it’ll grow back - and now one of Wade’s friends has been brainwashed/joined Hydra, making him a target of Wolverine. Why I’d rather see Deadpool get back into the Cable’s death-centered world of Endangered Species, this albiet bloody distraction seems amusing enough.
Video game geeks are definitely going to want to check out the first installment of Halo: Uprising. Not only does the comic pick off where Halo 2 left off, but its also written by Brian Michael Bendis, one of the best comic book writers in the House of Ideas right now.
Scarlett Witch takes center stage in Mystic Arcana. Considering the last time we saw her she was off in her rocker, or at least, semi-completely blissful to her out-of-control powers, this should be interesting to say the least. The mini-series also continues the exploits of a young man trying to take the place of Sorcerer Surpreme, a title which currently belongs to Doctor Strange.
And lastly, X-Men 202 continues with the Endangered Species storyline, as the beseiged X-Mansion finds Cannonball and Iceman trying to stay ahead of the Marauders to mount a counterattack. I can’t say too much for the artwork - at least on the cover - but like Green Lantern, this is one title which has must-read all over. Both have become the comic book equivalent of 24 overnight - something the flagging X-Men titles desperately require!
