Almost a year ago we wrote about Jonathan Coulton ending his “Thing A Week” project where he wrote one song a week and released them each Friday via a podcast. Well, turns out that the “Thing A Week” project may have just started to pay off for JoCo, as his fans lovingly call him.
His song “Code Monkey“, which you can listen to if you follow the link, has become the theme song for the G4 show “Code Monkeys”.
I would have written about this sooner, but I wasn’t sure if I was hearing correctly or not during the commercials for this show. So, I held off until I could watch the first couple of episodes before reporting. Sure enough, it’s the same song that I fell in love with about a year ago.
Apparently, people though that G4 had ripped Coulton off and were sending him emails right and left on the matter. This is not the case, everything is above the table on this one. In fact, last month Mr. Coulton responded to the emails and gave a short explanation as to what happened. I’m not going to quote the post word for word, but I will quote the summary for those of you too lazy to go read it yourselves.
quote from JonathanCoulton.com:
To answer your questions, yes I do know about it, and yes they got permission, and yes a certain amount of money changed hands, so it’s all official: I have sold out.
Regardless of his self-proclaimed sell-out, it’s good to see that the internet may actually be useful for more than porn and stolen music after all. And to Mr. Coulton, your hard work is finally paying off, all of us here at Way of the Geek congratulate you for helping further legitimize the internet.
For those of you who have not heard any of Jonathan Coulton’s music, you may have missed obtaining every song in the “Thing A Week”, but many of his songs are still available for download on his site. So, go download the free ones, buy the rest, and enjoy.
