What’s better than a miniature Lego Chewbacca? Watching that miniature Lego Chewbacca rip the arms off a miniature Lego Storm Trooper. Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy lets you do just that. It’s a retelling of the original Star Wars saga through the artistic medium of Legos. Playing as your favorite characters through some of the more memorable scenes in the first three movies is kind of like going back to your childhood, except the picture quality isn’t as crappy and you don’t have to worry about the VCR eating the rented tape.
This game is easy enough for a child to pick it up, but still complicated enough that the adults and even avid gamers in the house will enjoy it. You can mix and match your Star Wars experience as well, thanks to the games Free Mode. Which lets you mix and match characters from different scenes and play as them in areas they would otherwise never see. Certain areas of Free Mode require you to do this, as they require use of abilities like The Force to open areas that aren’t attainable without it.
Exploration is key in this game, due to the fact that by exploring you can unlock other modes and mini-kits that will be used to build items later. Exploring is also a good way to find studs, the games currency. Which is used to buy new characters, abilities, and power-ups. You’ll also spend a good bit of time building Lego items in this game, which gives it the feeling of really playing in a Lego Universe. It doesn’t hurt that everything in the game, all the way up to the Deathstar is constructed out of Legos.
Unlike a standard Star Wars game, the Lego Star Wars franchise has managed to keep a good bit of humor infused into the story and gameplay. For instance, when you build a jukebox on some stages your enemies will stop attacking to headbang and play a little air guitar to a rocked-out version of the Imperial March.
This game has quite a few hours of fun wrapped up in it. If you’ve got children in your family, or just enjoy a bit of innocent fun in your games, this is a buy.
Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is available through GameFly as well as other video game retailers.
