Don’t think Marvel will let the Universe off the hook that easy on the Fourth of July.
In a sombering celebration, Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America - Iron Man #5 depicts Cap’s funeral, and its profound effect on his Avengers comrade - and Civil War adversary - Tony Stark. This has one has been getting major attention from the media outlets, so please pick up early!
If you are depressed about Captain America’s death, the following crossover should put a smile on your face - as Captain America teams up with Optimus Prime himself in New Avengers/Transformers #1, which focuses on war between Latveria and Symkaria (Silver Sable’s country). And what could be better than a Cap/Autobot team-up? How about Doctor Doom and Megatron! I don’t think there is a room big enough to house those two egos.
What’s worse than being cornered by flesh-eating former superheroes? A man named Ash finds out in Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness #5, when he’s trapped in Latveria with zombies outside and murderous Doctor Doom inside. This is the finale for the crossover-heavy Army of Darkness books, and Ash is expected to return to his title soon after.
Thor #1 boosts “not a clone! not a robot!” I hope he’s not a combination of the above last light time! Still, I think this book is the proper place for Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, who is ending his run on Amazing Spider-Man soon. The first five pages of this comic wowed me to the core - hopefully this book can get the Norse God of Thunder back on track.
Hot off her engagement to Green Arrow, Black Canary gets her own well-deserved mini-series this month, as the League of Assassins, an organization once lead by Ra’s Al Ghul himself, come calling for Sin, Black Canary’s adopted daughter and potential martial arts prodigy.
I’ve heard from multiple friends Paul Dini’s Detective Comics #834 is where its at this week, as Batman has to escape a death-trap worthy of Houdini himself to save himself and a gravely wounded Zatanna. Oh yeah, and the Joker’s involved, making this one book to definitely pick up this week.
On the Image side, you might want to pick up Astounding Wolf-Man #2. I picked up the first issue as part of Free Comic Book Day and was not disappointed. The howling comic - written by Robert Kirkman of Invincible, Marvel Zombies and Walking Dead fame - follows a man who scales city walls and hunts men on a full moon.
That’s all for this week. Expect more forays into the four color page next week!
