    Comic Book Rundown:
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Jul 17th, 2007

Probably the biggest news on the DC side of the things is All-Flash #1, the relaunch of the Flash title, which finds Wally West back in the tights and looking for the murderer(s) of his successor - Bart Allen, formerly known as Impulse.

There’s also Amazons Attack #4 - with one of heck of a cover - as well as word Supergirl and Wonder Girl had supposedly betrayed the US, and are currently going after the President of the United States.

There’s one hell of a cross over in Brave and the Bold #5 - which features multiple factions vying for the Book of Destiny (presumably of the Destiny). The cover features the Legion of Superheroes, but the solitications also mention Batman, Blue Beetle, Lobo, Supergirl and still more!

On the Marvel Side, Black Knight finally gets his due in Mystic Arcana #2. As geeky as it sounds, I’ve been waiting for this character to come back into the found since the second Heroes for Hire series.

The Order #1 sets of Tony Stark’s California-based Intitative team. It seems to be an almost Apprentice-like take of superheroes, who have always been seen as something of celebrities in the Marvel Universe - well, except for the X-Men. I don’t know how I feel about it, but its worth pointing out.

Mark Bagley draws his last issue of Ultimate Spider-Man in #111, ending a historic run while passing the torch to Stuart Immonen, who co-draws this issue. Given how good Mark Bagley is, its worth picking up. Also, uhhh, they introduce Ultimate Spot. Again, don’t know how I feel about that.

World War Hulk #2 seems to have the giant green goliath taking out heroes left and right. The Inhumans have already been hit. And the Avengers and Fantastic Four might find themselves sorry for Tony Stark and Reed Richard’s Illuminati deal not too long ago.

That’s it for this week. Not as many pickings, but still some major historic issues potentially lining the shelves this week.

You know… someone suggested to me the other day that Marvel may be about to do a thing where Tony Stark and/or Captain America were replaced by Skrulls for the purposes of instigating the Civil War (and that it was Skrull-Cap who got himself capped).

If they go down that route, it will be (IMO) the worst kind of excuse-laden Reset Button Push since Bobby Ewing showed up in the shower. It would cheapen EVERYTHING that Marvel did that was actually good about Civil War (and there was no small amount of that, even if it really amounted to just an excuse to do a Wing-head vs. Shell-head story). The scary thing is… I can so see Joe Q going down this route.

Have you heard anything to that effect yourself?

      Devin,

I’ll answer that with a little yes and a big NO.

The Skrulls are here, they’ve been here since New Avengers #1, and things got worse when their whole empire was lost in Annhilation. It was recently revealed that the Elektra that took over the Hand was a Skrull imposter (which does make sense - why would Elektra go 180 into a super-villain after years being a semi-good girl).

However, Bendis has assured us the Skrull storyline doesn’t bring Cap back to the dead and doesn’t interefere with or entirely recon Civil War. But he does point fingers at Tony Stark . . . which is just kind of weird.

So I’ll leave it where every other comic journalist is at: on the seat of their pants, wondering if this story will pan out or not!

More than anything, really, I just don’t want it to shake out that Tony’s hiding a green complexion under that helmet. Marvel’s done, IMO, a good job of repositioning him as “a basically good man who does bad things for a higher purpose,” and to have him be a Skrull would be such a cheat to get him back on the “good side.”

I’m actually hoping World War Hulk brings back some semblance of order in the M.U. - no more of this post-Civil War jitters. I like where Tony Stark’s side is, I like where Luke Cage’s side is - I don’t want to see them at each other’s throats for next ten years. Apparently Iron Man offered Luke’s team amnesty if they cooperated in fighting the Hulk - though Doctor Strange isn’t sure it’ll make a difference.

Speaking of Luke Cage, here’s another worrisome aspect of the Skrull story - his kid might be one of them too, leading me to wonder if his whole marriage with Jessica Jones is a lie. Bendis did such a good job setting JJ in Alias, does he need to make her a Skrull to boot?

The whole Skrull thing reminds me of the Changelings infiltrating Earth in Deep Space Nine. I hope that its handled responsibly instead of being used as an “out” for so many things that have happened in the MU so far.

The Order looks like it might be interesting — I’ll have to check it out. With them being based in Cali, there should be a good chance they’ll run into the Runaways sooner or later.
