    Comic Book Rundown 06/13/07
Posted by Richard Pulfer on Jun 12th, 2007

So its another week for comics and talk of World War Hulk is starting to heat-up. What looks good? Let’s start on the DC side before we get to the Jolley Green Giant.

Green Arrow is ending in #75. Has it really been 75 issues? It seems like Kevin Smith was just kicking it off with Quiver the other day. The cover shows G.A. proposes to on-and-off lover Black Canary? Can this four-color Ross and Rachel finally agree on the big question? I, for one, definitely hope so. Despite Oliver Queen’s continued womanizing, the two characters have had the most dynamic chemistry for thirty, going on forty, years. So yes, it seems about time to tie the knot?

DMZ opens another issue over at Vertigo. Issue #20 finds reporter Matty Roth on the streets getting opinions on a deadly crossfire which took place in the Escape from New York-style Manhattan.

Cable and Deadpool #41 finally unite the ultimate Odd Couple, and play directly into the events of X-Men. With “Endangered Species” looming closer and closer on the horizon, this funny book seems to most attractive in the bleak crossover-to-come.

Mystic Arcana, the book which promises to finally redefine the Marvel magicians in some definitive way that doesn’t include Dr. Strange pulling a deus ex machina out of his hat, ships today with Magik #1, which features the New Mutants character crossing paths with a young man who desires to be Sorcerer Surpreme. I sincerely hope this project is as good as it looks, because Marvel has suffered so many setbacks in its magic category.

New Avengers #31 ships with hardly any solication preview, promising “the most important page in any Marvel comic this year.” What’s it going to be? Will the New Avengers finally run aground with their duty-bound Mighty compatriots?  How will this all tie into Elecktra? And will Marvel finally make good on a promise to break the Internet once and for all?

Nova #3 looks interesting, as the former New Warrior - who just saved the universe - must come to terms with the fact that many of his comrades were at the heart of the tragedy which triggered Civil War. As Nova mulls Tony Stark’s offer, the Thunderbolts launch a pre-emptive strike, complete with Nova’s former friend Speedball, not a tortured operative named Penance. This is the one series which keeps on turning up the heat. Seriously, don’t miss it!

We also get Sub-Mariner #1 shipping today as well. The series has Namor tracking down a terrorist which might be one of his own people, with the new director of SHIELD, Tony Stark, already itching to take down Namor himself. The cover looks great, but I’m interested to see if the creative team can succeed where so many have failed in making Namor a kep player in the M.U.

And finally the star attraction - World War Hulk! Last summer, four heroes voted to exile the Hulk to the farthest reaches of space, and now, the Hulk has returned with an empire in tow to take vengence on those four former friends! Unfortunately, one hero is a king, another a Sorcerer Surpreme and one more the acting director of SHIELD! It seems they’ll be more than couple instances of collateral damage, and the real question remains - who are the Champions - a group of heroes siding with the Hulk?

As you can see, you got plenty of picks to choose from - mostly on the Marvel side. Be sure to wait outside of your comic shop early - a lot of these, including the pick above, won’t last long in the shop!
