Its the first week of June, so what’s on the menu for the four color fare? Hot fun in the sun means a lot of comics are winding up their summer blockbuster epics, but we’ll start with one arc which is winding down a historic run - Birds of Prey.
Birds of Prey #107 is winding down Gail Simone’s run on the title she brought back the bargin bin, as she pits a new line-up of Birds against the semi-heroic/semi-villainous Secret Six - the very team Simone established in Villains United. With tongue-in-cheek dialogue, quirky humor, over-the-top action and stakes which keep getting higher, Simone’s Birds of Prey should have at least one issue in every fan’s collection.
It seems like every major event in DC has imperiled the Flash - from Crisis on Infinite Earths through Zero Hour and Infinite Crisis. Is Countdown any different? You can find out in Flash’s potentially unlucky issue 13, which might find a different person in the Flash suit judging by the blacked-out cover. Then again, it is the cover, and comic cover have been known for their misleading edge.
If you’re a fan of the CW series Supernatural - and still dreading that +3 month gap between seasons - you might want to check out Supernatural: Origins #2 from Wildstorm, which deals with father John’s first hunt. With an awesome cover by Tim Sale and a comic written by Supernatural producer Peter Johnson, you should find plenty to keep you occupied until the next season.
Avengers: The Intitative #3Â is touting yet another can’t-miss-moment in ‘07 comics. Whether they’re bluffing or this is the long-fabeled moment which will break the Internet is anyone guess - I personally don’t hope to the later, as I’d be out of a job! The issue does have War Machine and a group of superhero newbies tackling Marvel’s Most Wanted Insect himself - Spider-Man!
New Warriors #1 is also hitting shelves. I’ve heard surprisingly good thing about this title, comparing it to the next Runaways or Young Avengers. Its an odd choice - the team was, after all, largely to blame for Civil War - and mostly killed in the opening shot. Just how they’ll pick to fill this new roster and just how they’ll play a role in the team’s legacy is interesting enough, so I’d certainly recommend buying this book!
Finally, be sure to check out the last part of the first story-arc of Joss Whedon’s slayer magnum opus - Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #4. Written by Whedon himself, and soon be tackled by a who’s who of comics, the issue has all of your favorite characters - well, the one’s that survived anyway - as they lead a large army of slayers against the darkness threatening the world. Too bad the US government has looked upon the destruction of Sunnydale way back in Season 7 as a terrorist act, and Buffy and her Scoobies as the culprits! With Whedon’s trademark dialogue intact, Buffy has made a superb transition from television to comic, and has yet to disappoint!
