    Halo 3 Beta: First Impressions
Posted by Shawn M. on May 19th, 2007

After a 14 hour wait (though it seemed like days to the hardcore Halo fans), the Crackdown issue was fixed and the world was finally able to slip on Master Chief’s helmet and start “pwning sum n00bs”. Now that it’s finally here, was it worth the wait?

Having just migrated to the XBox, Halo 3 is my first real hands-on experience with the franchise. I haven’t really played a First Person Shooter since the olden days of Quake and Doom, but it was easy enough to get back into the groove. My first match was with a friend as part of a four versus four team. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the chat, but I did manage to get my first official kill in the Halo universe. In the following sessions, I managed to pick up a few more kills while managing not to get killed so often myself.

There’s also the option to participate in free-for-all games, and that’s where I’ve been honing my skills as of late. While I may not be coming in first, I’m getting to the point where I usually finish third or fourth, and averaging about ten kills per game. Not too bad for a Final Fantasy vet, ‘eh?

The fact that I, a novice player, can pick up on the basics of the game so easily speaks highly of Halo 3’s playability. So far, every player that I’ve gamed with has been civil and enjoyable, and I haven’t run into the fabled “potty-mouthed 12 year olds” that reportedly populate Halo 2.

Based on the Beta so far, it looks like Halo 3 will be a pretty good game. I’m very interested to see how the single-player campaign will look, but I’ve been enjoying the multiplayer so far. Based on what a few people — longtime Halo fans, at that — have told me so far, they’re having a great time with the Beta as well. So, it looks like Bungie will have another hit on their hands.

Considering the hype that led up to the Beta release, the internet uproar over the delayed launch, and the positve feelings so far, it looks like the last half of the year could belong to Microsoft and Master Chief.
